Course Description:The components of this program include skill
acquisition, fitness training, community service and expeditions. A
working journal assures documentation of these activities. The goal of
this course is to foster a responsible attitude in the use of the
out-of-doors as a learning and recreational environment. This means
developing self-reliance, preparedness and a stewardship for the
environments that are explored in this course. This course is
coeducational and occurs outside the timetable.
Students are
responsible for providing their own specific gear required for the
three, multiday out-of-school expeditions. Some personal gear is
available for rent from the Outdoor Education department. There are also fees for a 16-hour Wilderness First Aid and Food Safe Course (which occurs
outside class time) and successful candidates
receive a Wilderness First Aid and a Food Safe Certificate. For each of the term trips,
students will incur a charge for food, transportation,
assistant guide fees, group equipment, and park/camping fees. Trip dates are posted below.
Students who withdraw from a scheduled trip for non-medical reasons are
charged for non-recoverable expenses. This decision is made at the
school’s discretion. Students need a minimum of 120 activity hours from training for and partaking in the scheduled trips in order to obtain their credit in this course.
All candidates for this course should be enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program by September 10, if they wish to use one of the trips as a qualifying journey. This is not mandatory.
